I recently came across this idea while surfing the internet late one night and almost fell out of bed – I loved it so much. A Mother Blessing Ceremony instead of a Baby Shower!
Okay, let me explain a little bit more…
So, we have these baby showers to bring people together and celebrate the fact that you’re having a baby. They bring gifts, sometimes things you need for the baby and sometimes things you don’t but are just too cute and hard to resist. But in the end, you don’t actually need a whole lot for the baby when they first arrive.
Then you’re left with all these gifts, frantically trying to find space for it all – how much does a little human actually need?!
And then you have the baby and use about ¼ of the ‘stuff’ you have accumulated. Most of it you forget about and then they’ve outgrown it by the time you find it again. The stuff you do like you tend to use over and over again.
The Baby Shower – is it actually practical?
Okay, now enter the Mother Blessing Ceremony…
This is a similar idea to a baby shower, you still gather with the people who will support you in your Mamahood journey, but instead of bringing gifts only for the baby, they bring practical gifts, love, support and encouragement for you, Mama!
Here are some ideas that would be so useful to a Postpartum Mama:
I’m a big fan of gifting experiences / services over material things and by throwing a Mother Blessing Ceremony, you’re offering more support for a healing postpartum Mama – things she may not even know she needs until she experiences them.
The more we can take off Mama’s plate, the more energy she can spend sinking into her new role and getting to know her babe.
What do you think? Are you open to a Mother Blessing Ceremony? Do you have more ideas you would add to the list?
